Jesus Rode a Donkey contains a study guide for each chapter, made up of questions that would be suitable for any discussion of values, and questions that are specifically designed for Christian groups, to promote dialogue between Democrats and Republicans. It is my hope that Democrats and Republicans can study these issues together, examine issues in the light of Scripture, and perhaps even be moved to action. Here are a few sample questions:
From Chapter One: How Would Jesus Vote?
- Look at the various definitions of "conservative" and "liberal." In what ways do you see yourself as a conservative? In what ways are you a liberal? What are the dangers of both points of view when taken to the extreme?
From Chapter Two: The Poor, The Needy, Widows, and Orphans
- Why are there poor people? What social and political structures contribute to poverty?
From Chapter Three: Beautiful Savior, Kind of Creation
- Read Genesis 1. Why did God call the creation "Good"? ...To what extent do you find God present in creation?
From Chapter Four: The Ethical Dilemna of Abortion
- Read the Democrats for Life policy statement found at http://www.democratsforlife.org/. Compare this to the Republican stance. Do you find elements in both that are helpful? Or unhelpful?
From Chapter Five: Homosexuals: Civil Rights? Civil Unions?
- Consider some of the equal rights that homosexuals want, such as hospital visitation rights, the right to inherit, the right to adopt......which of these rights do you think are fair? Which are not? Why?
From Chapter Six: War and Peace
- Why do you think the early Christians were told not to take part in war? What changed? Why did it change? What would happen if Christians continued to take this nonviolent stand?
From Chapter 7: Confronting Terrorism and Fear
- If you are in a situation of conflict and fear, in what ways do you draw on your faith and your relationship with God? Has it been effective?
From Chapter 8: Secrets, Lies, and Deceptions
- Why do politicians feel the need to lie? Is a lie ever justified?
From Chapter 9: Crossing the Political Divide
- Where do you see places of agreement between the two parties?...Consider the issues mentioned in this book - ranging from ecology and health care, to the national debt, war, terrorism, homosexuality, abortion, and so on. On which of these issues might we find agreement?
